Music to My Ears
This talented and accomplished musician, who is also a skilled guitarist, pianist, and vocalist, made a successful recovery after being referred to occupational therapy (OT) for bilateral tendonitis, following repetitive stress injuries. Repetitive stress injuries (RSIs) are conditions that result from prolonged exposure to the same activity or task without adequate rest and recovery, leading to irritation or damage to tissues and structures. Musicians are particularly prone to RSIs due to the repetitive nature of long hours spent practicing and performing. Many musicians experiencing pain from such injuries seek medical attention to manage their symptoms.
Physicians often collaborate with occupational therapists to educate patients, alleviate pain, and guide rehabilitation, enabling them to return to their normal activities. This patient was highly motivated and compliant with her therapy program. Given the severity of her symptoms, her treatment included the use of bilateral custom wrist orthoses to rest and immobilize her wrists and forearms.
Her treatment plan also incorporated patient education, ergonomic assessments with tailored recommendations, and a range of therapeutic modalities, including ultrasound, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercises, all aimed at supporting her recovery and helping her return to playing and performing.
Thanks to her dedication and the comprehensive care she received, she made an incredible recovery and was able to go on tour, performing in prestigious venues such as Radio City and other remarkable locations worldwide.
